Crypto Commonwealth, the first scientific publisher on blockchain, Jackey Yan explains more

Crypto Commonwealth, blockchain, Jackey Yan

Interview with Jackey Yan from Crypto Commonwealth

What is your own background briefly?

I got my PhD degree in Computer Engineering. My PhD research area was pretty hardcore – to apply the optimization algorithms on the design of circuitry chips, which is used in various electronics, such as computers and mobile devices.

Upon graduation in 2010, I moved to Silicon Valley, California, and landed a job at Cadence Design Systems(NASDAQ: CNDS), which is a well-recognized technology leader in Electronic Design Automation (EDA), and an Intelligent System Design provider delivering tools, software, and IP to help people build great products that connect the world. My current role at Cadence is a Software Architect. Besides my daily job at Cadence, I am also a seasoned investor, who is interested in real estates and crypto currencies.

Does it seem like a logical background to what you do now?

At Crypto Commonwealth, we do a lot of quantitative alpha research, on which my expertise of optimization and modeling algorithms can be directly applied. Besides, I believe that my experiences on investments and entrepreneurship would also help to bring Crypto Commonwealth to a whole new level on venture investing and asset management.

How was the last 12 months?

The past year was as a-heck-of-a-run for me and for Crypto Commonwealth (CC) as well. I got to know the crypto area about 9 months ago. We saw that CC turned from a complete new concept to a real crypto that anyone can buy, and even better, it’s about to conduct the first round of ICO. This is sending a very encouraging message to the team of CC. We will keep the momentum and drive the company to the next level.

Why did you get involved with Crypto Commonwealth?

Dr. Wayne Yee, the founder of CC, was my roommate at the graduate school. We knew each other on the 1st day when we landed in the United States to pursue our American dreams. We both are very interested in blockchain and crypto currencies, while Wayne is of no doubt an expert in this area, given his piled experience at hedge funds.

A long time ago, we discussed various possible applications on crypto currencies, including real estates. Not until last year, he brought up the idea of applying crypto currency on the scientific publishing industry. This idea was brilliant and revolutionary! For a long time (ever since it exists), the authors and researchers who published research papers at the journals are unfairly treated. The profits all go to the publishers’ pockets, while the hard work is actually done by the authors, who even have to pay to the publishers to get articles published.

I immediately came onboard for this new adventure, with the goal to get this changed. We compensate scholars and authors with COMM the token we issue, for their help in article submission, review and editing. We also offer grants to endorse their research. We are proud to be the first scientific publisher on blockchain, and seek to innovate the traditional model fundamentally. And we both believe the journey would be challenging and exciting. The most important and critical part is that we must build a crypto ecosystem that people can trust and rely on.

What will your role be?

My expertise and technical experience would make me a great fit at CC. I would guide and assist the researchers to conduct quantitative research, oversee the construction of technical infrastructures, help resolve new challenges, and envision the potential paths to take along the exciting journey to improving traditional publishing and asset management models on blockchain.

What are your goals for 2020 with CC?

The immediate goal is to achieve a successful ICO. Starting from mid 2020, we will focus more on building the platform of the e-prints on our website. For myself,  I would focus more on technical infrastructure guidance, and expanding the footprints of CC to the general public. I would also like to explore the collaboration between CC and the academia area such as universities and research institutions. Both Dr.Wayne Yee and I have strong academic background and publication records in top-tier journals and conferences.

We have reached out to and got support from quite a few scholars in renowned institutions including Harvard, MIT, Chicago University, and University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. When the budget consolidates, we will reach out to more of our academic contacts for strategic partnerships, advisory and collaboration. And a number of them have expressed strong interest to review scientific grants for us!

BTC and ether seem to be rising again, what does the crypto world look like for 2020 and beyond?

In general, crypto currencies (BTC, ETH, etc.) are still at a very early stage. Compared to the currency system we are using daily, for example BTC is only about 11-year-old, which is yet the “oldest” crypto currency. I would not predict the short term investment. I bet on the long run, i.e., 20+ years.

Who and where do you get inspiration from?

My favorite figure in the tech domain is Elon Musk. He is a risk taker, yet managed his work and life well on every crisis and always brought it to the next level successfully. When I’m at times of tough decisions and cross roads, mostly while making major decisions that could change my life for the next couple of years, I often think of what he would do.

And the nice thing is he likes Ethereum, the second largest crypto in the world and so do I. He is the true iron man in real life, making the impossibilities possible, and you know what, the word “impossible” itself says “I’m possible!”
