VIDEODoes it seem like a logical background to what you do now?
Everything I have ever done in the past has brought me up to this point. With 15+ years experience in the startup world, I have found that my niche is now fostering innovation to tackle important environmental challenges.
How was the last 12 months?
The past 12 months entailed fostering international collaborations with Industry, Academia and Government all with the goal of finding innovations that solve environmental challenges. We felt that by incorporating the non-profit in 2019 we could create a vehicle that helped startups receive the resources they needed in order to grow and scale.
1 min pitch for what you are doing now with Planet Calls?
The Planet Calls is a sustainability accelerator aimed at identifying and helping to grow innovative startups that solve global environmental challenges. Our objective is to build a global Cleantech community for startups and investors who are creating economies and networks in service of the Planet.
We have two types of clients: i) Large companies to whom we provide solution-based scouting and development of innovations services that lead to pilot tests and ii) SME’s which we assist with accelerating their businesses through the industry focused accelerator that provides the following resources (advice, education, networking, funding).
Why did you get involved with this idea?
I often walk along the Irish beaches and rivers, I couldn’t help but notice the growing pollution crisis that seemed to be going unnoticed in the country and how it was severely impacting our waters. I started picking up litter by myself. Often I’ll be on a walk and Irish people walking past me will say “Well done” or “you’re putting me to shame” and one time the strangest comment I received was “you surely can’t be Irish”.
When I realised the problem wasn’t going away I decided to do something about it by raising awareness around the pollution crisis and how we as individuals can start making small changes that would make an impact on a broader scale.
Why do you think it is such a powerful idea, and how soon might we achieve the cleanup side of your goals?
It’s powerful because, if we don’t act now we simply won’t have any marine life in a few years time. All the sea birds, whales, turtles, fish would have consumed plastic floating in the ocean and died of starvation as a result. Many people are oblivious to the damage that is being done to our environment by the over production and overuse of plastic.
To give you an idea, these are two photos’ I took which show what Dublin looks like on my walks. I wonder why this has become acceptable to the community and to the government? If we all start being part of the solution instead of the cause we can reach our goals of freeing the oceans of plastic by 2025.
In terms of plastics in general, it would be great if we could produce biodegradable plastics to reverse the current problem – how likely/unlikely is this idea?
This already is a reality and The Planet Calls in fact has a number of SME’s on our portfolio that have developed alternative biodegradable plastic. However we are not getting enough support from the State to support these new innovations. We need to secure more funding to be able to secure pilot projects, manufacture at scale to role out the solution and replace conventional plastics at scale.
This also means we need to secure corporate and charity partnerships that want to be instrumental in growing innovations to solve future sustainability problems.
What kind of projects does your accelerator invest in? Who have you signed up already, how much do you invest? How can people apply?
The Planet Calls has projects focused on the following sectors: Waste & Recycling, Plastics & Polymers, Clean water, Low Carbon Mobility, Sustainable Manufacturing, Sustainable Construction and Circular Economy.
The SME’s will be put through the accelerator and after their successful graduation whereby the business models and team have shown commitment and promise then funding will be discussed. Funding is typically around 25k to 50K. If there are larger funding requirements this is where State funding and angel investors are required.
In addition we are raising funding to donate 5 autonomous litter collection devices to clean up areas in marine plastic crisis. As an example the Dublin harbour would be one area we’d like to help clean up since the pollution is so severe along the surrounding coast.
We are on a mission to clean up marine plastics and this fundraising project is a quick and easy solution to deploy and deliver instant results. We are committed to stopping the devastating effects marine plastics have on marine life and the people on our planet and this is why this project is so important to us.
How can people find out more about you personally & your work?
Please reach out to me on social@theplanetcalls.com and please support and spread our message by sharing our posts on social media @theplanetcalls. If you would like to donate towards our missions please also reach out to us via email.
Who and where do you get inspiration from?
I think my biggest motivation is my 8 year old daughter. I despair when I see young kids standing up to climate change and pollution as I am sad the planet is in such a dire situation and the kids are having to act on this. However I am determined to do my utmost to help reverse the effects of overproduction and pollution of plastic and help clean the ocean of marine plastics.
Most of my inspiration comes from entrepreneurs who have no limitations and also feel like they can and should always do better. Elon Musk is a good example.
Anything else you’d like to add / we should have asked?
I would like to appeal to the larger companies and corporates to join forces with The Planet Calls to develop innovative projects that lead to real social and environmental change. The Planet Calls provides solution-based scouting and development of innovations services that lead to pilot tests and we’d like to foster more of these collaborations.
We have also created a petition where we are collecting signatures to support our quest in minimising single-use plastic waste. Please sign and pass on if you would like to support us.
