A weekend in Paradise, Overnight Wilderness With Sligo Kayak Tours

Sligo, Kayaking, Tours

Where and when will it be on?

Our Overnight Wilderness Tours will take place on the 11/12 April, 18/19 July and 12/13 September this year. We have chosen these dates so that we can experience the beauty of Upper Lough Erne in three distinct seasons.

How many years have you been running these trips?

We have been running overnight tours for three years, but this will be the first year in Lough Erne. Our original venue was in Lough Gill, County Sligo but this winter myself and a friend started exploring Lough Erne in our kayaks and realized that it was the perfect place to run multi day trips. It is vast, and the upper section is peppered with small islands and channels which are ideal to navigate with our sea kayaks. We had read about a converted farmhouse on one of the islands that makes a beautiful overnight stay and decided to go explore and see if it was something that we might be able to offer to our customers.

What was the inspiration to start these tours?

We have been running half day trips for the last six years, which give our customers a good taste of kayaking, we get to see some amazing places and spend time in nature but more often than not we’d be paddling back in wishing we could spend more time out in the wilderness! We, as kayak guides, get to meet a lot of interesting people and its really nice to get to know them better over a two day trip.

Sitting around a campfire chatting is a great way to disconnect from the fast paced life that we lead day to day. Its important to me that our tours offer a lot of time for people to relax and just enjoy the simplicity of nature.

What exciting things can people look forward to?

The tour showcases a tranquil landscape of islands, woodlands and historical ruins such as the 17th Century ruin of Crom Castle and the island folly of Crichton Tower. We will explore a stand of Yew Trees that are reputed to be 800 years old, and marvel at the diverse wildlife of the area, herons, eight species of bats, otters, fallow deer and swans all call this area home. Its a paradise for kayaking and as we travel so silently we will be able to see a lot of wildlife over the two days.

What opportunities are on offer for those attending?

The tour is run with a Leave No Trace ethos, as are all our tours. We go to great measures to ensure our footprint is light on the land, and as part of this ethos I am a trained Leave No Trace instructor. I will be demonstrating various practical skills throughout the trip that can be applied to daily life to lessen the impact we have and try encourage a sustainable way of life. Apart from that, there will be plenty of time to wander around and listen to the birds, read a book in the sunshine, or enjoy some healthy food.

Sligo is a great place for kayaking

What tips would you give to people attending to get the most out of the trip?

I would recommend packing a few changes of clothes, and not to forget the basics like a good book. People are welcome to book in alone, with a friend/partner or as a group, our tours are capped at twelve people so we lessen our impact on the land and also get to know each other that little bit more over the weekend. The start point of Crom Estate is a beautiful place managed by the National Trust and it would be a good idea to allow some time before or after the tour to walk around the grounds and take in the history and scenery.
