Odyssey Hackathon, 19th – 21st June, Groningen

Hackathon, Odyssey, June

When and where is it on?

The Odyssey Hackathon will take place from the 19th until the 21st of June. It will take place in a vibrant student city in the north of the Netherlands.

How many years has it been going?

This year’s edition already is the fourth edition of the Odyssey Hackathon. What started as a rather small event, has grown into an annual hackathon which provides a new space where everyone (and everything) can become part of a solution to a 21st century challenge. In this year’s hackathon, organized by the start-up community of Groningen Seaports, 105 teams are building solutions for 21 complex challenges, among other the selected teams will collaborate with corporates, governments, and non-profits to create solutions to how we organize society in the 21st century. With a total of 2000 participants from 50 countries, the Odyssey Hackathon is the biggest blockchain hackathon of the world.

What was the inspiration to start it?

The challenges of the 21st century won’t be solved by single entities but by collaborative ecosystems. Odyssey brings together a unique international ecosystem of key stakeholders, from startups to big corporates, from creatives to regulators, from developers to legal experts, and many others, each holding a part of the solution in their hands.

The challenges tackled in the Odyssey Hackathon have a global societal and economic impact, and are tied to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

At the fourth edition of the Hackathon, the areas where teams can make an impact range from energy transition, logistics, urban infrastructure, healthcare, public safety to nature conservation and digital identity. Hundreds of Jedi, including the legal and financial regulators, will be there to support the teams in building their solutions. Heleen van Wijk, our business manager circular economy, will attend as a plastic expert jedi.

What exciting things can people look forward to?

One of the Irish companies we cooperate with, Eiravato, is selected for the Odyssey Hackathon. Eiravato is a proven waste digitization platform. Their beyond state of art approach goes further than current waste classification, presenting a new, more detailed vision of the waste management structure and material outcome. Supported by transparency and traceability they are building a trust in recycled materials, enabling wide implementation of Circular Economy principles.

What opportunities are on offer for those attending?

The teams attending the Odyssey hackathon get the chance to work together with corporate, governmental and non-profit challenge leads on complex challenges. Also, they get a chance to transform the way we do business, organize society and deal with the environment through mass collaboration.

The hackathon is just the opener, it gives teams an opportunity to gain launching clients and to continue working with them after the hackathon. Odyssey offers the attending teams firsthand knowledge and support from tech, legal and regulatory experts to develop the best possible solution. Finally, there is €200,000 in total cash rewards for all teams.

Who will be speaking?

Several experts in the fields of the addressed challenges will be speaking on the event.

How can people book tickets / when does it usually sell out?

The hackathon is an invitation-only event. The teams, jedi’s, stakeholders and investors will attend the event.
